No walking today

December 14, 2007

I was up late last night as well as the night before…just not enough sleep, plus I lost my walking partner.  Hannah is not quite ready to get up at 5 am everyday and walk.  Considering her normal routine is to wake around 7:30-8:00, the jump to 5 ended up being too stressful on her emotional stability.

Well, I have just enough to whine about today but would rather not.  I despise whiners.

For those interested in hiking and back country camping, I have setup a wetpaint site for this very focus in the Virginia area.  It is still being developed, but there is a little bit of structure to it.

  1. Very Cool wetpaint site. Would the 20-mile hike up in the mountains be your longest such venture of your Life, or is this something that you’ve done before ?

  2. It would be my longest such venture. I did a 2 day, 5 mile hike with Hannah, Jack (my 2 oldest children), and Kent, my hiking buddy.

  3. And then there was the time… not your longest venture, but definitely adventurous… when you convinced your Mom to go on a pleasant hike from our campsite in Cherokee NC, and then decided to go off the beaten path, and discovered a narrow ledge on the side of a cliff, and I promised if you would get me back safely to the campsite I would never follow you on an adventure again!!!

  4. Ha! I had completely forgotten about that. That was a lot of fun…was it not? ;)

  5. I’ve been to Cherokee North Carolina. About 15 or 16 years ago I picked up my brother at Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama, and then we drove up to Tennessee. We visited Nashville, Knoxville, and Gatlinburg, and then we took U.S. 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park up to Newfound Gap (5,048 feet above sea level) right along the Tennessee / North Carolina state line. It became the highest point that I’ve ever been to in my entire Life – a record that would stand until last month when I eclipsed it by more than 900 feet. Back down the mountains we went, and we ended up at Cherokee North Carolina. Good Times !

  6. My longest was a 100 mile hike over 6 days in Philmont, NM when I was 15. The second longest was a 16 mile hike in School of Infantry that lasted about 8 hours (I was 21).

  7. Happy (belated) birthday!!!
(my internet service went down yesterday….)

Haven’t heard much about your walking lately; how’s it going??? You know, the OLDER you get, the more you need to press in; before you know it, you’ll be hitting the Big Forty …okay, two more years to go…

Hope you had a great day!

  8. YES – I also miss your ‘morning walk updates’. Have you already given up on this endeavor, or are you just not posting about it ?

  9. Combination of both: not doing it and not posting about it.
